  Andy Townsend began his football playing career in 1980 when he joined Welling United and then Weymouth before playing professionally for Southampton, Norwich City, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Middlesborough, West Bromwich Albion and internationally for the Republic of Ireland, and has captained every team he has played for.†Andy has won 70 caps and has been captain of the Republic of Ireland a record number of times, leading them into the knockout stages of the 1990 and 1994 World Cups in Italy and the US. During his time at Aston Villa, they won the League Cup in both 1994 and 1996.

His warm personality coupled with his playing experience and knowledge of football has meant that Andy has always been in demand both on and off the pitch and, since his retirement in 2000, he has become one of the most prominent sports broadcasters on television and radio. He has been part of ITV’s football presentation for over a decade working with personalities such as Des Lynam, Jim Rosenthal and currently Steve Rider on everything from the Champions League to the Championship and from the World Cup to the FA Cup. For the last 7 years he has presented his own show on Talksport, the biggest commercial Radio station in the country with over 2.5 million weekly listeners.
