Styles of Dance:
Salsa is a dance fueled by the mix of Latin and Caribbean beats and movements. It is well known for its sexy movements and challenging footwork, salsa dancing is really one of the must-try dances for people with an adventurous and sexy personality.
L.A. style salsa is danced on 1, in a line, two essential elements of this dance are the forward–backward basic and the cross-body lead. It is strongly influenced by the Mambo, Swing, Argentine Tango and Latin Ballroom dancing styles.
Cuban Salsa: Casino or "Cuban Salsa"is danced in three points which makes up the circular motion as couple face each other in intricate patterns of arms and body movement.
Bachata dance style comes from the Dominican Republic where the music also was born. It can range from very simple basics to intricate footwork, turns/figures and rhythmic free style moves and with alternate between close (romantic) and open position (more playful adding footwork, turns/figures, rhythmic torso etc.)
The style of Kizomba emphasizes a very smooth way of dancing with influences of Tango steps, but one of the main differences is that the lower body, the hip, does forward/backwards and circle movements. The Kizomba dancing style is known to be very sensual and has a similar pace to Zouk.
Merengue is a Caribbean style of dance music typically in duple and triple time, chiefly associated with Dominica. Authentic Merengue is one of the simplest Latin dances to learn. The beat is clear and the rhythm constant. The emphasis is on simplicity in step patterns rather than drama and style. The beauty of Merengue is in its simplicity and rural, unsophisticated feel.
African Dance is very different to other dance forms as it is an artform that represents movement and sequences in everyday life in Africa. T is a spontaneous release of energy that translates everyday life experiences into movement. It is a source of communication through which it is possinle to demonstrate emotions, beliefs, activities and other reactions through rhythmic movement. You can expect to have a lot of fun in this class, release plenty of energy and express yourself.
Hip-hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to modern, popular hip-hop music. It includes a wide range of styles primarily breaking, locking and popping. An energetic class that not only teaches you exciting movements and technique, but also instills rhythm and precision in your muscle memory.A fun filled and vibrant class environment offering new routines every time.
Introduction to Dance
A specific ‘beginner’ class for those people longing to move but unsure where to begin and are extremely overwhelmed by larger classes. This class is designed as an introduction to dance, exploring movement through music, stimulate students imagination and promote creativity. Teaching the basic fundamentals to dance, the classes are upbeat and high energy.
Private and Couples Classes
Private lessons are offered for anybody from beginners who prefer to learn the basics alone before building up the courage to dance with others, all the way to Professionals who would like technical advice and styling techniques. Booking a private lesson is also a great way for couples to learn to dance together for an event, choreograph for a wedding dance, or just for a new hobby. Charge per private lesson is $55US per 45minutes.
Dance Aerobics A fantastic way to sweat, burn some calories and have fun moving your body to fun, upbeat tracks. Whether it is Latin beats, hiphop or Caribbean Soca, you will socilaise, learn some moves and most of all have fun! All abilities welcome.
Introducing your Dance Teacher: ShonHomenya
ShonHomenya has a passion for dance. Over the years Shonhas learned many different styles, refining his skills and creating his own unique dance style and teaching technique. He discovered salsa in 2004, inspired by the likes of Eddie Torres, Felipe Polanco, Tito and Tamara and soon became the Ghana Salsa Champion in 2006. Since then his dancing career has soared to new heights as he performed all over Ghana and internationally including Nigeria, South Africa and Abidjan. Shon worked as an Events Organizer for the Accra Salsa Congress 2012 and 2013 and has performed along with numerous talented Professional dancers such as Alien Ramirez, Lee Rios, Troy and Jorjet, and Marchant and Davina.
Shon dances salsa on1 and on2, bachata and street dance and is well known for his artistic salsa footworks. Shon loves teaching children and has worked as Lead Dance Instructor and choreographer in international schools in Accra. He has a special flare for teaching and brings a lot of fun and energy to the lessons.
